Creating a Bicycle-Friendly City
A meeting of minds and hearts is blossoming this spring into Alameda's own advocacy group Bike Walk Alameda.
BikeAlameda, founded in 1999, has had a strong impact on the award winning bikeability of our city and was the primary influence in creating the City's Bicycle Master Plan and superior design for the Fernside cycle track. BA has hosted several annual social group rides and supported Valet Bike Parking service at all local public events.
Pedestrian Friendly Alameda, has spearheaded several successful programs like Walk and Roll to School Day, Keep Kids Alive campaign and APRD's Alameda Walks program. They have supported outreach programs for youth and seniors and have advocated for pedestrian safety and comfortable access to roadways for walkers and the disabled. Join us at one of our events or meetings to learn more about what we can do when we pool our energies and what you can do to help.

BikeAlameda Board Meeting If you can contribute skills to our board, please consider talking to one of our board members about how you can contribute. There are ten board meetings a year. Plus choose something that you are passionate about and pursue that for us. It could be anything from 'building our membership', 'business liaison', 'estuary crossing' or advocacy, working with the schools and children.
We've updated our website page with a complete list of volunteer opportunities. Please visit and see if you can donate some time and have fun with us, too. |

When a few bikes are parked illegally or inconveniently, it is usually a sign that there is a lack of bike parking - maybe the bike parking is hidden or out of the way from the main entrances.
This seems to be the case with some racks at South Shore Center. Particularly, the courtyard with the Jamba Juice and Panera. Although there is parking around the corner approaching the Petco, most bicyclists didn't know it existed, according to comments that we received. When BikeAlameda surveyed bicyclists for bike rack needs in the center, the results were not so surprising. (See below).
We will followup with center staff,Todd Faludi, to see if they know how to accommodate people biking to the center.
After more than a year of public meetings and strong advocacy on the part of BikeAlameda members and volunteers, the Shoreline Drive project is meeting our vision of a complete street - friendly to people walking, biking and driving.
The project goals and priorities were to provide more bicycling options, minimize traffic impacts, maintain bay views, reduce multi-use path conflicts, provide parking for apartments/condos, improve visibility, reduce motor vehicle speeds, make safer.
BikeAlameda is again working with Alameda Haunt Your House! to put on a night bike ride that is sure to be fun and exciting. Join us from 5:30pm-8:30pm. Ride will depart at 6:30pm.
