BikeAlameda Parks 117 Bikes, Sets One-Day Record

Busy BikeAlameda volunteers parked a record 117 bicycles in seven hours Saturday during the second annual Peanut Butter Jam Festival on Webster Street, the most ever for a one-day event.

"Our Valet Bike Parking service had the biggest turnout for a one-day event in our four year history of parking bikes," said Lucy Gigli, President and co-founder of BikeAlameda. "Our volunteers were really busy, parking one bike every three minutes."

Critical Glass: A Bicycle Tour of Historic Stained Glass in Alameda

Envisioned as a way to encourage Alamedans to appreciate both cycling and Alameda's rich architectural heritage, Critical Glass was a collaborative effort of BikeAlameda and the Alameda Museum. The day began at the Alameda Museum with a slide show and lecture by stained glass artist Ken Matthias about the stained glass windows, many of which are historically significant, that we would see on our ride. Ken shared with us his passion for these lovely creations and answered many questions.

We then departed for the first leg of our tour through central Alameda, stopping at 13 houses to look at windows. We ate lunch at Alameda's own house museum, the Meyer's House and then enjoyed a tour of the house which features stained glass windows and cabinet doors in the dining room as well as wonderful architecture and furnishings.

The second leg of our tour took us to 14 more homes as well as the Garrett Mansion bed and breakfast and a private home where we were treated to a tour and refreshments. After that many of the 25 participants continued on through the Gold Coast with Ken Matthias to view still more stained glass.

Deemed a great success by participants, Critical Glass afforded people an opportunity to get both physical and mental exercise while enjoying a fabulous Alameda summer day.
