Alameda/Oakland Cross-Estuary Bicycle Ferry to begin Service

The Alameda/Oakland Cross-estuary Bicycle Ferry will begin Weekend service on January 17th! Schedules are still being developed and will be available next week. Weekend service on the Bike Ferry will be the prelude to All week and commuter service for cyclists from the west end of Alameda (at Chevy's) and Jack London Square allowing cyclists to avoid the daunting and nasty tubes and their east end detour!

Updated: The schedule follows...

The Bicycle Ferry will, in the future, operate seven days a week, with the exception of New Year's Day (Jan. 1), Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day (Dec. 25).

The service will be $1.

This service is long awaited by west-end bicyclists and other Alamedans hoping for a safer way to get to downtown Oakland. The City of Alameda has been planning this for many years and is able to implement the bicycle ferry through a grant from the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency and Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

The hope is that ridership will be strong and be able to prove that having a safe and convenient estuary crossing for bicyclists and pedestrians will increase non auto trips to and from Oakland.

For all you who have said that you would bike to Oakland from the west end if there were an alternative to the tubes - now is your chance to do. BikeAlameda welcomes any and all comments on this service and improvements.

See Jack London Square Water Taxi for more information.
