Estuary Crossing Campaign -- What You Can Do Right Now!
The Estuary Crossing Feasibility Study that we have been waiting for, and that we made happen, is almost complete. If you attended any of the four meetings -- thanks.
Our work to get a safe, clean crossing is not yet complete, though.
As we understand it, the feasibility study will recommend short, medium and long term options. The recommended long term option is a bike/pedestrian bridge (estimated $55 million) or bike/pedestrian bridge with transit (amount unknown, but more than $100 million).
We are excited about the bridge recommendation because it will solve ALL of the west end estuary crossing problems. While the current fiscal crises make the climate for infrastructure projects a little chilly right now, the long term horizon for the bridge is far off -- possibly 10 to 20 years, hopefully well beyond these crises, at a time when population will have grown and even more people will be interested in solving problems like our reliance on petroleum and global warming.
To take the next step in making the bridge a reality, the City of Alameda has submitted two grant applications, totaling $900,000. If successful, there will be funding for the engineering phase, which will determine feasible locations and complete the environmental work necessary to build the bridge.
These grant applications desperately need your support. Please see below for what you can do.
BikeAlameda continues to look towards a very bright future for west Alameda and bicycle/pedestrian transportation. If Redding, California can build a $25 million bridge with one-quarter the population and one-sixth the density as the Oakland/Alameda area, then why can't we?
It's time for us to take the next big step and really support this effort, or we may forever be stuck with the noisy, smelly, narrow Posey Tube for 24 hour access. We would love to be able to have a new campaign slogan like "Bike the Estuary Bridge in 2018". Do you want to help make that happen?
Please send me a copy of any letter or email that you may write to that we may keep track of support.
