Sharrows on Oak Street!

A Safer Bikeway - Sharrows

Oak Street from Encinal Avenue to Lincoln Avenue now has “sharrows” in the road. Sharrows are a combination of signs and in-street stencils to show riders and drivers the best place for bicyclists to ride. The stencils are designed to keep bicyclists away from car doors and help them “take the lane” for their safety. This does not eliminate the need for bike lanes on Oak Street in the future, but it is a good start.

This bike improvement is part of a series of mitigations for the increase in traffic through the Oak Street corridor that is expected to happen with the combination of the Civic Center Parking Garage and Alameda Theatre projects.

The other bike improvements are: 1. The restoration of the Central Avenue bike lanes between Oak Street and Walnut Streets. 2. Electronic lockers and bike racks inside the parking garage
